Stanley Kubric's "2001: A Space Odyssey" is arguably the best, and definitely the strangest, science fiction movie ever made. Famous primarily for its striking and mind-blowing visual effects, most of the characters in the film were completely irrelevant and forgettable. All except for the sentient and increasingly malevolent on-board ship computer, the HAL 9000. That single glowing red "eye" and emotionless voice has become a cultural icon and still sends shivers up the spines of new generations of viewers.
