Army Regulation 670-5, dated September 1956, changed the color of rank badges from olive on dark blue to gold on Army Green (the color of the new service uniform) or Army Blue (the color of the Dress Blue Uniform.)
Subdued patches and insignia were introduced during the Vietnam War and were made mandatory for wear on the field uniform starting July 1, 1970. Subdued black metal insignia pins had been authorized for wear on the collar of the work uniforms by DA Message 292128Z, December 1967.
The Army announced in 2006 that the Army Blue Uniform would be modified for use as a service uniform as well as a dress uniform. The transition from an Army Green Army Service Uniform to an Army Blue Army Service Uniform was expected to occur from 2007 through 2011.
