FOR THE ARMY Below this text are Army cups, Army shirts, Army merchandise, and Army gifts that feature an Army emblem and James Montgomery Flagg's classic World War I poster, in which Uncle Sam exhorts Americans to report to the nearest Army recruitment center.
James Montgomery Flagg’s recruiting poster for World War I has become one of the best-known portrayals of the character known as Uncle Sam. The first visual representation of Uncle Sam appeared in political cartoons in 1832.
The Congress of the United States adopted Uncle Sam as the national symbol in 1961 and recognized Samuel Wilson as the inspiration behind the symbol. Samuel Wilson, a businessman from New York also known as Uncle Sam, stamped his shipments during the War of 1812 with the initials of the United States, U.S. The coincidence led to the use of the nickname Uncle Sam for the United States government.
The artist, James Montgomery Flagg, used himself as a model for the poster which was used in World War I and again during World War II. This poster has been described as the best known of any era.
