The 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team evolved from the 172nd Infantry Brigade. On order, the Arctic Wolves Brigade, deploys rapidly to a designated contingency area of operation by air and conducts operations either as a separate Brigade Combat Team or under the control of a contingency force headquarters.
The 172d Stryker Brigade has three infantry battalions, a field artillery battalion, and a support battalion.
Units of the 172nd Stryker Brigade include:
First Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment;
Second Battalion, First Infantry Regiment;
Fourth Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment;
Fourth Battalion, 11th Field Artillery;
Fourth Squadron, 14th U. S. Cavalry;
172nd Brigade Support Battalion;
Company A (Anti-Tank), 52nd Infantry Regiment;
562nd Engineer Company;
21st Signal Company;
572nd Military Intelligence Company.
In July, 2001, the Army selected the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Separate) at Fort Wainwright, Alaksa, and Fort Richardson, Alaska, and the 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Light), at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, as the next locations for the stationing of Interim Brigade Combat Teams as a part of Army Transformation. The Interim Force, including the Alaska and Hawaii Interim Brigade Combat Teams, is fielded with the Interim Armored Vehicle (IAV), a General Motors Light Armored Vehicle. The IAV, which weighs 19 tons and has 8 wheels is C-130 transportable and is normally able to operate without any further logistical support for three days once on the ground.
