Forty years ago, some of the greatest scientists in the world began studying humanity’s effect on the global environment. This is an introduction to the five major discoveries that made Planetary Biology possible.

Our actions affect the entire world, but humans don’t naturally perceive the entire world. Now the world population is increasing, our resources are diminishing, and people are growing increasingly desperate.

The United States Consititution was written by people who had an 18th century understanding of science. The most fundamental laws of biology and physics weren’t discovered until the 19th century. Now we have a political system that conflicts with fundamental laws of the universe. And the universe is winning.

Most Americans believe that science is just some abstract ideas people had. Religious fundamentalists are undermining public support for science. Capitalists are giving science a bad name. Public schools aren’t teaching nearly enough about science.

A government whose politicians ignore science is not a secular government. And forced ignorance is not democracy.

Our politicians all went to college. No one held a gun to their heads and told them not to learn about planetary science.

The future of the environment, and of humanity, depends on worldwide radical social change.
