Albanians are descendants from the ancient Illyrian tribe and this is where their unique language originates. They have had a turbulent history having undergone long periods of foreign rule including that of the Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths, Huns, Slavs, Venetians, and the Turks. In spite of these foreign influences, Albania has preserved much of its Illyrian culture and traditions.
This culture includes its cuisine which has many dishes unique to 'Sqhiperia' but which also has a strong Turkish influence. Albanian food varies depending on the region. You can find wonderful roast lamb dishes in the mountainous areas and fresh fish and seafood dishes by the coast. As a general rule, the northern regions cook with butter while in the south they prefer olive oil.
Meat (mish) dishes in Albania are often made with lamb, beef or veal. These may be eaten as kebabs (qebaps), meatballs (qofte) or roasted (pjekur). Offal is also quite popular in Albania.
Other popular dishes in Albanian cuisine include byrek which is filo pastry stuffed with cheese or meat and herbs. Stuffed tomatoes and stuffed eggplant dishes are very popular. Bread is eaten with most meals and the few rice dishes available include delicious spinach rice. Vegetables play a large role in the Albanian diet and eggplant, zucchini, capsicum, onion, and tomato are widely eaten.
Albanians prefer to finish their meals with fresh fruit rather than dessert although they do enjoy ice cream (akullore). If you are looking to try a local drink while in Albania then try raki. This is a popular spirit which is often homemade. Most raki is made from grapes but mulberry raki is also available. A local cognac (konjak) is also popular.
