Albanian Designs : Kukes

In the north of Albania, near the border with Kosova, you'll find the city of Kukes (Kukesi). This small city of around 15,000 people is in a beautiful mountainous region known as the Vikut Mountains or sometimes just as the Albanian Alps. Kukes was the first town to be nominated for the Nobel Peach Prize after it happily accepted 150,000 refugees during the Kosova conflict.

In remote mountainous areas, such as those found around Kukes, you can find many species of birds and mammals. Albania has around 300 native species of birds and during the migration season is a bird watchers paradise.

Animals found in Albania include bears, wolves, jackals, boars, deer, rabbits, squirrels, bats (14 species), and lynx. These animals are generally found in dense forest away from urban areas although some wolves have been seen in recent times on the outskirts of some cities.

Albania is also home to the poisonous Balkan Adder. Scorpions are fairly common in Albania but, thankfully, are not poisonous. In the country, it is possible to come across a variety of reptiles including snakes and lizards. However, you are unlikely to see these unless you are really looking for them.
