Albanian Designs : Elbasan
Elbasan (Elbasani) is one of Albania's largest cities with a population of around 100,000. It is situated in central Albania, 120m above sea level, and surrounded by mountains. The city has been occupied by many different people including the Serbs, Macedonians, Bulgarians, Austrians, Italians, and Turks. The influence of these people can be seen in a number of buildings in the old town.
Once one of Albania's most beautiful cities, Elbasan is now heavily polluted, mainly due to industrialisation during the communist period. Steel has done the most damage to the environment although other industries have contributed to the pollution problem. The government and people of Elbasan are working to improve this situation and hope to see some improvement in the coming years.
However, Elbasan has plenty of places of interest such as the ancient city walls, a number of churches and mosques, and Turkish baths. Elbasan has a very well respected university resulting in many young people from the region moving to the city to study. You can also find one of the best libraries in Albania in this city.
There are many visitors to Elbasani each year. Many of these are from former residents who have moved to European countries such as Italy or Germany or who now live in the US. These people often go back each year to celebrate the New Year with their relatives or to spend the summer there.
