If you visit Albania, there is a good chance that you'll visit Durres (Durresi in Albanian, Durazzo in Italian) seeing it's the main port and a major commercial centre of Albania.

Durres is situated on the Adriatic Sea. It used to be the capital of Albania but today is a bustling port city with a population of around 120,000. People visit Durres for its beaches but you would probably best to stay away from the port area. The beaches between Vlora and Saranda are much better options if you want to spend time swimming or relaxing in the sun.

Walking around the ancient city, you will see plenty of evidence of its Greek and Roman history. There are also many beautiful 20th century buildings in good condition. Worth visiting are the Archaeological Museum and the Great Mosque. There is an impressive Roman Amphitheatre close to the centre which was built between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. On the hill to the west you can see the lighthouse and the Palace of King Ahmet Zogu which unfortunately is not open to visitors.

Durres is a great place to base yourself if you are visiting Albania. It is quite central so you can easily visit nearby cities such as Vlora, Berat, and Tirana, which is only 33 kilometres away. If you are planning on staying longer you can rent an apartment looking over the sea and maybe learn Albanian at one of the local schools.
