Albanian Designs : Berat

Berat is a town of around 50,000 people and is one of the prettier towns in Albania. There are many historical points of interest here including a number of churches and mosques which were spared destruction during the communist period. The older parts of the town are great to walk around as you can admire the beautiful villas from the Ottoman era, many of which have been renovated in recent times.

The best place to visit in Berat (Berati) is the Kalasa, most of which dates from the 14th century. It is high above the city and surrounded by stone walls. This area was traditionally a Christian area and more than ten churches and chapels can be found inside, although at one point there was twice that number. The Kalasa also offers great views over Berat and neighbouring areas.

Down in the main area of town is what was traditionally the Muslim quarter. Here you can find 3 mosques including the Sultan's Mosque which dates from the 14th century and is one of the oldest mosques in Albania. From here you can cross over a stone bridge built in 1780 to the other old town where you can visit an old Illyrian fortress.

Berat is overlooked by Mt Tomorri, an imposing 2415m mountain which is almost always covered by snow. The Mt Tomorri National Park is a great place to visit for its beautiful landscapes and fresh, clean air.

Berat is a lively little city where you can find many cafes and restaurants with cheap but delicious food. It's definitely a nice place to spend a few relaxing days.
