These patterns were generated by a cellular automaton (a computer programme that simulates the way organisms grow and reproduce) similar to Conway's Game of Life. (The rule, for those who care, is M:1357/1357 "Exploding"). The result resembles a Chinese screen or "leak window" pattern. It isn't quite a fractal, but similar finer and finer patterns are found in each element. So its pleasing harmony is entirely artificial - beauty arising from mathematics.
