Discovered as recently as 1985, Fullerenes are a molecular structure for carbon found to be quite prevalent in nature (in soot, for example). Named after radical architect and thinker Buckminister Fuller, they resemble his geodesic domes. This, the most basic, C60, resembles a soccer ball. Its uses are still being investigated. Substances made with another atom contained in the ball have extraordinary properties. In these original drawings, the dots are not electrons but stand for the probability of an electron being at that point.
