The tuatara, Sphenodon punctatus
, dates from before
the Jurassic age. It's essentially unchanged for 225 million years. Not a lizard, it is a relict species, with no living relatives for the last 64 million years. It lives in burrows it shares with seabirds on a few predator-free offshore islands of New Zealand.
