The 42nd BW was deactivated as a Bomb Wing and now serves as an Air Base Wing at Maxwell AFB. The 42nd Bomb Wing fought in: WII, Vietnam, and Operation Desert Storm. The 42nd started out as a medium Bomb Group from, October 1941-January 1942. They attacked Japanese targets in: Guadalcanal, New Britain, Bougainville Island, the Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, Philippines, French Indochina, Mindanao, and Borneo. The 42nd was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for its pre-invasion bombing of Balikpapan, June 23-30, 1945. The group ended the war by attacking Japanese units on Luzon, from July-August 1945. The 42nd Bombardment Group was inactivated on May 10th, 1946. The 42nd was reactivated on February 19th, 1953 at Limestone Air Force Base, Maine. Now part of Strategic Air Command, the 42nd Bombardment Wing was assigned the same three squadrons that had belonged to the old World War II group: the 69th, 70th, and 75th Bombardment Squadrons. The new SAC wing came under the direction of Eighth Air Force flying B-36 bombers. On January 18th, 1955, the 42nd Air Refueling Squadron joined the wing. It flew propeller-driven KC-97G tankers. The first Boeing B-52C Stratofortress assigned to the wing arrived at the renamed Loring AFB on June 16th, 1956. By the end of the year, the wing had completely replaced the older B-36 fleet. The wing was the first B-36 unit in SAC to convert to B-52s. When KC-135A tankers were assigned to the 42nd Air Refueling Squadron in 1957, the wing became an all-jet force. In January 1962, the wing began to participate in the airborne alert operation nicknamed Chrome Dome. The B-52C models were eventually replaced with D and finally B-52Gs models which were upgraded over the coming decades. In 1972 the wing participated in Bullet Shot, Young Tiger, and Linebacker II operations. In December a surface-to-air missile shot down a B-52 and its crew flying over North Vietnam. The crew managed to fly the crippled bomber over Thailand before bailing out. All were rescued. On August 7th 1990, the wing began to deploy in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The wing sent bombers to Diego Garcia. The B-52G aircrews flew 960 missions (485 combat) in 44 days and dropped 12,588,766 pounds of bombs on enemy targets. After the war, President George Bush ordered alert crews to stand down for the first time in Loring’s history. That December, Strategic Air Command stood down all of its alert forces. At the same time, the wing’s home station, Loring AFB, prepared for closure. The last B-52G assigned to the 42nd departed the base on November 16th, 1993. The final KC-135R left on March 2nd, 1994. Loring AFB closed on September 30th 1994, and the 42d Wing was inactivated the same day. On October 1st, 1994 the unit was activated and redesignated as the 42d Air Base Wing and took over as the host unit at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
