The A-10 is also affectionately called "Warthog" and "Can Opener". The A-10 grew out of a need for a close-support ground-attack aircraft. The need had been demonstrated in both Korea and Vietnam. After winning a competition with Northrop’s A-9, the first production A-10 flew in October 1975. The primary A-10 mission is to kill enemy tanks. During Operation Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, the A-10s 30 mm armor piercing explosive ammunition, Maverick missiles, and cluster bombs proved lethal to Iraqi troops and hundreds of Iraqi tanks. Although primarily intended for daylight missions, many Gulf War missions were flown at night.
