Polydactyl Maine Coons

Polydactylism in the Maine Coon cat has been documented as part of the breed for many years - long before the establishment of the pedigree cat fancy as we know it now, let alone the setting up of the accepted standard for the Maine Coon breed, which does not allow this trait. Yet up to 40% of the original Maine cats (their original name) were thought to have been polydactyl, through a gene that does not cause any health problems other than the (understandable!) occasional overgrown claw. This site is established and maintained in support of the Polydactyl Maine Coon by PolyStandard, a Yahoo group, and PolyTrak (www.polytrak.net), the database for recording and tracking polydactyl Maine Coons and their offspring with their paw configurations. We believe that as a known trait of the breed it should be supported and made permissible in the official documentation and that is what this group aims to do. If you love this adorable big-footed breed and agree it should be included then wear your PolyMC badge with pride!
