Surface Warfare is the community within the Navy that involves the use of surface fleet ships for the missions of forward naval presence, sea control, and projection of power ashore.
Surface Warfare Officers are the men and women who lead the sailors within the many specialized divisions of a ship's crew.
Surface Warfare Officers are those who serve on surface ships. Junior Officers on a surface ship drive the ship, fight the ship, lead a Division of enlisted sailors, and manage the maintenance of equipment. Surface warfare ships include cruisers, destroyers, and frigates.
With lightning-quick communications, space-based radar systems, precision weapons and advanced engineering systems, Navy surface warfare ships are considered the tip of the spear in battle. They are the ships you want with you when enemies are submerged, flying above you or land based.
No carrier, cargo ship, supply ship, or oil tanker proceeds into an area where enemy action is possible without the faster, more agile surface warfare ships to provide anti-aircraft, anti-submarine or anti-ship protective measures.
All personnel who choose Surface Warfare can look forward to a challenging career as a member of the oldest warfare community in the Navy. They will find themselves in the most modern fleet in the world serving on a variety of ships such as Arleigh Burke class destroyers or Ticonderoga class cruisers, considered by most to be the cutting edge in warship technology.
Officers assigned to Surface Warfare will be assigned to the Surface Warfare Officers School Command and attend the Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island. They learn essential skills such as standing in-port and underway watches and managing the various administrative duties of a division officer, Officers are trained in the areas of Operations, Combat Systems and Leadership: navigational rules of the road, watchstanding, communications, shiphandling, basic tactics, and weapons systems.
Officers receive platform specific engineering training, such as basic engineering in steam, boiler water, feed water, gas turbine, and diesel systems.
The community of Surface Warfare is full of history and tradition as well as a strong commitment to the defense of the country and the support of its commitments around the world.
