When I brought a copy of my photograph into Esposito’s Pork Store on Court Street in Carroll Gardens on a Saturday morning, it was jammed with excited shoppers, loyal Italian neighbors with a list of specialties and visitors on a Brooklyn tour just enjoying the atmosphere. Owner George was clearly to busy to focus on me so I asked for a sandwich. I’m not Italian so I asked for “some ham, but some nice ham, and some cheese, but some really nice Italian cheese. And put it on that nice fresh roll there.”
George reflected back to me, “OK, so you want me to take some fresh Italian bread and add some delicious imported Proschiutto and freshly made sliced Mozzarella and maybe some marinated sweet mixed peppers, put this on oour home-made Italian bread and gently drizzle Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic vinaigrette over it? Is that right?”
