Bedford-Stuyvesant is also known as Bed-Stuy which is an extension of the name of the Village of Bedford, expanded to include the area of Stuyvesant Heights. The name Stuyvesant comes from Peter Stuyvesant, the last governor of the colony of New Netherlands.
Bedford-Stuyvesant's prominent neighborhood identity is due in part Spike Lee who has prominently featured Bedford-Stuyvesant in his films and Chris Rock's television sitcom, Everybody Hates Chris, who is a teenager in Bed-Stuy.
Aaliyah, The Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z, Big Daddy Kane, Lil Kim, Mos Def, Maino, Fabolous, and Papoose all come out of Bedford-Stuyvesant.
